Call to Action

June 5 – June 9

ANSWERS ON TRUMPCARE

Now that we have the CBO score on TrumpCare, which shows 23 million people will be uninsured in a decade, the legislation will move full steam ahead to the Senate.

If you visit or call Crapo or Risch’s office, here are questions to ask them:

From Indivisible Project’s “Defend the ACA and Medicaid”:

  1. Republicans in the House sided with Trump over the well being of their constituents when they voted to pass TrumpCare. They voted for it without a CBO score, meaning that they didn’t even know how much it would harm their constituents. We now have a CBO score and know that TrumpCare would kick 23 million people off of their health care. As your constituent, can you promise me that you:
    • “…won’t vote for a bill that would lead to millions of Americans losing their health coverage?”
    • “…won’t vote for a bill without first knowing its full implications from a CBO score?”
  2. I don’t believe that ensuring “access” to health care, which doesn’t take into account affordability or quality of care, is good enough. Can you guarantee that any replacement plan will cover AT LEAST as many people that would be covered under the ACA? Can you guarantee that no one will lose their coverage as a result of your vote?
  3. I [or someone I know] has “x” condition and I’m afraid that I [they] will be unable to obtain affordable health coverage because of my [their] pre-existing condition. I want to know if you can assure me that I’ll be able to get the same consumer protections as the ACA, including for a pre-existing condition?
  4. Thanks to the ACA, I was able to enroll in my state’s Medicaid program for the first time. I’m afraid that a replacement plan will end funding for state Medicaid expansions. Can you assure me that funding for Medicaid won’t get cut under ANY replacement plan?
  5. Currently, anyone who is eligible for Medicaid is able to get it. I’m one of those people. I’m afraid that I may lose my Medicaid coverage if the program is restructured. Can you also assure me that Medicaid will remain an entitlement, and that anyone eligible will be guaranteed coverage?

PARIS CLIMATE ACCORD

Senator Risch and Senator Crapo were 2 of 22 GOP Senators who signed a letter to the president urging him to withdraw from the Paris Accord – a voluntary agreement reached by every country in the world, except Nicaragua and Syria to limit the impacts of climate change.

Not all GOP Senator’s signed that letter, so why did Risch and Crapo? In the last three election cycles, Senator Risch received $149,530 in campaign donations from the fossil fuel industry, oil and gas; Mike Crapo received $137,006. Could those donations have impacted their decision to “believe” in climate change?

We would like to know.

We want to know why our Senators signed their name to a letter only 22% of the Congress signed urging the president to take our country backward, to isolate us and to harm our planet, and our children. Ask our Senators why they are putting oil-company interests ahead of our children and grandchildren? When America doesn’t lead in this agreement, they have opened the door for China to step in. This isn’t America First. This puts all of us last.

UNITED STATES CLIMATE ALLIANCE

Something amazing is forming out of the president’s withdrawal from the Paris accord and it’s called the United States Climate Alliance. The governor’s of five states so far have vowed to individually uphold the goals of the Paris Accord.

In addition, more than 100 mayors from across the country have agreed to adopt, honor, and uphold the Paris climate agreement goals within their individually cities.

We want to know if Mayor Bieter will pledge his support, or Mayor de Weerd, Mayor Jacobson, Mayor Widmyer, or Mayor Casper, or the mayor in your city.

All week, call or visit your local mayor’s office and ask if they will commit to the citizens of your community to invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency, to buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks. Ask if they will increase their efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, create a clean energy economy, and stand for environmental justice.

Ask if they will commit to uploading the goals of the Paris agreement.

RUSSIA

Thursday, June 8th could be the most publicly consequential day of the Trump-Russia investigation so far as we await the congressional testimony of former FBI Director James Comey.

He is scheduled to begin testifying at 8 a.m. MST, and is expected to offer his account of the Oval office conversation in which the President allegedly asked him to let the investigation into Mike Flynn go.

While we may or may not be able to anticipate what Comey will say, we still have a clear objective. And here is what we need to ask all week:

From the Indivisible Project:

For Republican House Members: There is a “discharge petition” that would force a vote on the Protecting our Democracy Act (H.R.356), a bill that would establish an independent commission to investigate Russian interference. I know you also believe in protecting our democracy—this should not be a partisan issue. Will you sign on to the discharge petition?

For Senators: Senator Cardin has a bill, S.27, that would establish a commission of independent experts to examine the facts regarding Russia and the 2016 election. Only Democratic Senators have signed on to Ben Cardin’s bill so far. This is not a time for partisanship— we are counting on you to put country over party and stand up for our democracy. Will you commit to co-sponsoring this bill today?

We are citizen activists. This is our opportunity to be loud and remind our MoC’s that they work for us, not the other way around. Stand Strong. Stand United. Stand Indivisible.
